Description
The Usher Art Gallery is an art gallery located on Lindum Road in Lincoln, built between 1926 and 1927 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The building features a combination of ashlar and brick with slate roofs. It has a plinth, rusticated quoins, and bays that are defined by giant pilasters. The façade includes a pseudo-frieze adorned with bucrania, an entablature, a parapet, and a balustrade. The gallery is two storeys high, with the upper storey being blind and consisting of seven by four bays.
The central section projects and features an open pediment along with a raised parapet that is topped with urns. There are steps leading up to a moulded doorcase that has a cornice supported by consoles and small flanking lights. Above the doorcase is a tall round-headed window with a keystone and a wrought-iron balcony. On either side of the entrance, there are three glazing bar windows on the ground floor.
The rear elevation has a projecting centre with three windows that have ornamental grilles, and above this is a round window. All the windows throughout the building are fitted with glazing bars.
Inside, the gallery boasts an open well stone staircase with landings and a patterned steel balustrade. There is an Ionic arcade in the stairwell and round arched openings in other areas. The galleries feature moulded beamed ceilings with cornices, while the top floor galleries have coved ceilings and arched roof lights.
