Description

Sessions House is a magistrates' court and former police station built in 1805 by William Hayward. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof with a rear wall stack. It has a plinth, a first-floor band, and eaves adorned with paired modillions. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays.

The symmetrical front is characterized by end bays that are defined by giant pilasters, each featuring an Ionic doorcase and pediment. Between these pilasters are three blank windows. Above, there are five glazing bar sash windows, all with rubbed brick heads. The north and south sides of the building have regular fenestration with glazing bar sashes, some of which are blank.

Inside, there is a cantilevered stone winder staircase with a shaped landing and iron stick balusters. The courtroom includes a moulded cornice and doorcases, panelled benches, and a semicircular dock with a sounding board. A gallery supported by iron posts features lamp holders. The enclosure for the magistrates' seats is splayed and topped with an enriched pediment that has a figure of Justice.

The grounds of this property are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County Reference Number 269.
