Description

3 and 3A Pottergate is a house that has been divided into two residences. Originally built in the 17th century, it incorporates medieval walling and was remodeled in the early 18th century, with further alterations made in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The building features coursed rubble and brick construction, topped with plain tile roofs and includes two gable and a single ridge stack.

The south front displays a nearly central half-glazed door from the 19th century, surrounded by a moulded frame and flanked by two glazing bar sashes with segmental heads on each side. To the right, there is another half-glazed door with an overlight, also from the 19th century. Above this door, two 19th-century glazing bar sashes with iron Gothic balconies are situated, accompanied by four smaller glazing bar sashes to their right. The upper section features three gabled dormers with two-light casements.

On the west front, there is a central square bay window that rises two stories and has a cornice, with a tripartite glazing bar sash on each floor. Above this, to the left, is a 19th-century casement window.

Inside, one room is notable for its full-height fielded panelling, enriched cornice, and a fireplace adorned with fluted Ionic piers and a panelled overmantel. The dogleg staircase features a shaped string, a ramped and scrolled handrail, and three vase and stem balusters per tread.

The mathematician George Boole lived in this house during the early 1840s.
