Description
4 Pottergate is a house that dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, with additions made in the mid-17th century, alterations around 1760, and further changes in the 19th century. It is constructed of dressed stone and coursed rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs, which include a single gable, ridge, and side wall brick stacks. The eaves are chamfered. The building is two storeys tall and has three bays, forming an L-plan.
The west front features an off-centre moulded doorcase that has been restored, with a four-centred arch and hoodmould. There is an unusual late 19th-century door with hexagonal glazed panels. To the right of the door, there is a blocked segmental carriage arch with a hoodmould and mask stops, which contains a 15th-century two-light window with a flat head and hoodmould. To the left, there are two glazing bar sash windows.
At the rear, there is a gabled wing on the left with shaped bargeboards and a three-light casement window. Above this wing, there is a glazing bar sash in an altered opening with a wooden lintel. To the right, there is a late 19th-century canted bay window, and above it, there are three glazing bar sash windows.
Inside, the first-floor room features 17th-century framed panelling and window seats.
The house was home to C.E.P. Charlesworth, a pioneer in the treatment of mental conditions, from 1820 to 1834. From around 1400 until about 1726, this building was part of a single property that included 5 Pottergate.
