Description

Judges' lodging, built around 1810 by William Hayward, is a notable building located on Castle Hill in Lincoln. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. The exterior includes a plinth, eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The building is two storeys high and has nine bays, with a projecting pedimented center that consists of three bays. This central section features a stone doorcase with an entablature and two Tuscan columns in antis, along with fielded panelled double doors and a fanlight above. Flanking the door are round-headed niches, and the pediment displays the Royal arms in Coade stone.

The wings of the building each have three glazing bar sashes on both floors, topped with brick flat arches. Inside, the central entrance hall rises to full height and contains a cantilevered wooden open well staircase, which has two stick balusters per tread and a ramped scrolled handrail. The ground floor features a dentilled cornice and a moulded elliptical arched doorway at the rear, leading to double doors with shaped glass panels.

To the right, the dining room includes a chair rail, frieze, moulded cornice, a mid-19th century marble fireplace, and shutters. It also has an elliptical arched recess with a moulded surround and a blank fanlight. The drawing room on the left mirrors this design, featuring panelled wainscot and walls, along with a painted slate fireplace and overmantel mirror. The first-floor landing and bedrooms have moulded cornices and six-panel doors, with the right bedroom showcasing a mid-19th century marble fireplace.

Outside, there is an attached iron railing that has a stepped stone plinth, curved ends, and a central double gate.
