Description
No. 4 Bailgate is a house that now functions as a house and shop. It dates from the early 18th century and was refronted in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of brick and features a pantile roof with brick coped gables and a side wall stack. The first floor has brick quoins and modillion eaves. It is two storeys tall, plus attics, and consists of a single bay. The pilastered wooden shopfront includes a central round-headed glazed door with a fanlight, flanked by single canted bay windows that have glazing bar top lights. Above the shopfront, there is a central Venetian window with a central bow window, which has a domed top and glazing bar sashes. Further up, there is a segment-headed dormer with a two-light casement. The interior has not been inspected. According to Pevsner, the building was formerly a Post Office.
