Black Holt former Atomic Bomb Store: D2 Missile Storage Bays

Black Holt former Atomic Bomb Store consists of a series of six D2 missile storage bays, which are the original facilities dating back to the mid-1950s.

The bays are constructed from reinforced concrete and steel. They are rectangular in shape and set within mounded earth, arranged in a D-shape on plan, with curved access paths leading to them.

The exterior features large mounded reinforced concrete structures aligned north to south, with access provided by curved paths lined with shuttered concrete. These paths rise to the full height of the mound and have deep-set overhangs that shelter the entrance. Each storage bay is accessed through large steel blast doors at either end, which are mounted on rollers and include inset wicket doors.

Inside, the storage space has rendered and painted concrete walls, with the roof supported by large exposed concrete beams. The blast doors are located at both ends of the space. An air conditioning plant is situated on one side, with a separate access passage leading to a single leaf steel door set within a concrete and brick-lined porch, located on the same side as the entrance paths. The machinery and electric wiring remain in place, housed within exposed metal casings.
