Description
Lea Gate Public House is a public house and inn located on Lea Gate Road in Coningsby. The building dates back to the 16th century, featuring a hall with a 17th-century parlour block and early 18th-century additions to the former lower end. It has undergone extensive alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of red brick, partly in English bond and partly in Flemish bond, with some areas painted white. The roof is covered in pantiles, with raised brick coped gables that are tumbled to the early 18th-century range. The building has an additive H plan, a single ridge, and features projecting wall and wall stacks.
It is two storeys high with a garret and has a six-bay front. The left-hand bay has two brick gable bands from the early 18th century, while there are three separate gables at the end pairs of bays. The central entrance features a planked door from the 19th century with a segmental brick head and a reset 16th-century carved shield above it. To the left, there is a 20th-century two-light window in the blocking of a doorway, along with two 20th-century French doors. To the right, a 20th-century door is sheltered by a contemporary gabled brick porch. Beyond this is an early 19th-century tripartite glazing bar sash window. The first floor has three glazing bar sashes, and in the garret, there is a fixed glazing bar light. All openings have segmental brick heads. The roof features a raking dormer with a glazing bar light and brick cheeks.
On the left-hand gable, there is a wrought iron hoop that is reputed to have held a torch to guide travellers over the Wildmore and Armtree Fens. In the right-hand eaves, there is a fire insurance plaque from the "Royal Co." On the rear gable, there is a large wooden boss in the shape of a man's head. The interior retains chamfered beams with ogee stops.
