Description
Sibsey Trader Mill is a tower windmill built in 1877 by Saunderson of Louth. It was restored in 1970 and 1981 by the Department of the Environment. The mill is constructed of tarred brick and features an ogee cupola topped with a small ball finial, a fan-tail, and six double-sided sails. It has decorative dentil and moulded eaves and stands five storeys tall, with a decorative wrought iron balcony on the second floor.
On the south side, there is a doorway accessed by six steps, leading to a plank double door. The second floor has a cambered arched doorway with a part-glazed door. The north side has a similar doorway and door to the second floor. Both the west and east sides feature single pivotal casements under cambered arches on each floor.
Inside, the machinery is fully operational. There is an elevator to the hurst, which ends in a hopper on the first floor, with a spout leading down to the ground floor. The first floor contains tentering gear and spouts, along with machinery that includes a bridge tree, governor, spindle with mace head, and gimbal bar. The second floor features a hopper, vat, quant, runner stone, two pairs of restored grey stones, and a single pair of French stones. The great spur wheel, which is made of iron, drives through mortice stone nuts. The fifth floor has an iron sack hoist and chain, along with an iron brake wheel, wallower, brake, and brake lever.
