Description

The Roman Wall in Horncastle is a Grade I listed structure located on the south side of Church Walk. This section of the wall dates from the late 3rd century to the mid 4th century and is constructed from Spilsby sandstone rubble. It includes a section of the south curtilage wall that extends westward, reaching heights of up to 2.83 metres and measuring 12.25 metres in length. There is another section of the wall that stands 2.20 metres high and stretches 13.20 metres long. Additionally, there is a section of the rubble core of the south-west bastion to the west, which is up to 2.20 metres high and 4.60 metres long. The wall is recognized as an Ancient Monument, numbered 44.
