Description
The Old Grammar School is a free grammar school that has been converted into a hall. It was originally established around 1329 and was refounded in 1571 by Lord Clinton as the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth. The building was rebuilt on its original site in 1778, with later alterations in 1855 and the 20th century.
Constructed of red brick, the school features a plain tiled roof with stone coped gables and kneelers. It is a single-storey structure with a six-bay front, including two bays added in 1855 on the left side. The façade has a plinth and decorative eaves. To the right, there is a doorway made of 20th-century brick, which includes a gabled porch with a plank door and inner plank doors, as well as narrow fixed lights in the return walls. This doorway and porch were inserted into a glazing bar sash window that has a segmental head, with triple glazing bars remaining above. To the left, there are three glazing bar sashes with a break in the bonding beyond, and two additional glazing bar sashes. All the windows feature segmental heads.
