Description
Cromwell House is a house located on West Street in Horncastle, dating from the early to late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof with gable stacks. The building has three storeys, including a top storey added in the late 18th century, and a five-bay front that was remodelled during this period.
The façade includes first and second floor brick bands, with a central doorway that has a segmental head, an overlight, and a panelled door. This doorway is flanked by two glazing bar sash windows on each side, and there are five similar windows above, all featuring segmental heads. Above these, there is a single smaller glazing bar sash window, flanked by two blind openings on each side, with all five having segmental heads; the outer blind openings are painted black.
At the rear, there is a low two-storey range with a very tall gable stack. Inside, there is an 18th-century oak panelled room, along with cornices, a staircase, window shutters, and window seats. The house was owned by Sir Joseph Banks.
