Description
The Grove Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It dates from the late 17th century, late 18th century, and around 1840. The building is constructed of red brick and stock brick, with some areas rendered. It features slate roofs with stone coped gables and kneelers, and has five ridge stacks, three of which have triple angle shafts, one with five angle shafts, and a fifth to the south with four shafts arranged in a cruciform plan.
The hotel has two storeys and an attic. The late 18th century west front has five bays, with a slightly projecting central bay and a projecting stock brick 19th century bay to the left that has a stepped gable and a large stone finial. This bay includes a slightly projecting bay window with double glazed doors flanked by narrow fixed lights, overlights, and a dentillated band above. To the right, there is a window in the 18th century bay with a 19th century glazed door featuring margin lights, which retains its segmental head and wedge lintel. There are four glazing bar sashes to the right and six above, all with segmental heads and wedge lintels.
The right side of the attic has three 19th century windows, all with coped gables and kneelers. The flanking attic windows have two light casements with glazing bars, while the central window has a single casement with glazing bars and a slit light in the gable above. The left 19th century bay features a three light casement with a moulded brick stepped hoodmould that has a coat of arms at its apex, and all the casements have segmental heads.
The north front, which is rendered and dates from the 19th century, has three bays with a plinth and a gabled porch to the left. The porch contains a doorway with a pointed head, a continuous moulded surround, and double plank doors. To the right, there are two glazing bar sashes, with three glazing bar sashes above, all having flat chamfered heads. Above the right window is a coat of arms with the inscription "Domino Confido," along with a small casement in the stepped gable above.
To the south, there is a small red brick 17th century range that is hemmed in by 19th century additions. This range has a steeply pitched roof with stone coped gables. The 19th century range is built against the south side and features two shuttered openings with segmental heads, as well as a traceried rose window in the stepped gable, which has a rectangular, brick moulded hood mould.
