Description

West Ashby House is a vicarage, now a house, dating back to approximately 1710, with significant alterations in the mid-18th century, early 19th century, and 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with plain tile and pantile roofs, brick coped and tumbled gables, an ornate bracketed eaves cornice, projecting gable stacks, and a single ridge stack to the rear. It is arranged in an L-shape.

The east front, approximately five bays wide and dating to around 1710, has a first-floor brick band. A central doorway, said to have originated from Captain Cook’s house in The Mile End Road, London, was inserted around 1930. This doorway features fluted Roman Doric pilasters, a panelled hood with ornate consoles, a frieze with parallel lines rising to a central point, a traceried fanlight, and a panelled door. Flanking the doorway are two glazing bar sashes on each side, with four glazing bar sashes above, all with segmental heads. Three dormer windows are above, the central window with a segmental head and the flanking windows with pediments, all containing small glazing bar sashes. A Venetian window, inserted around 1930, is on the south-west side of the front range, featuring outer Ionic pilasters flanking a pair of Ionic half columns, a central semi-circular headed window with an ashlar keystone and glazing bar sash. A staircase window to the left has a semi-circular head with an ashlar keystone and a glazing bar sash. The south side of the rear range has three bays and a first-floor brick band. A mid-18th century doorway, inserted around 1930, has a semi-circular headed moulded doorcase with the initials “GH,” a panelled hood with consoles and cherubs' heads, a panelled door, and is flanked by single two-light sliding sashes, with two two-light sliding sashes above, all with segmental heads. Small 19th and 20th century additions are present to the west and north.

The hall contains a black and white marble floor and a seven-flight return staircase with ornately carved tread ends, with three turned bannisters and square knops to each tread and a moulded handrail. The hall also features 18th-century fielded pine panelling, taken from Kelsey House, Mercer Row, Louth, around 1930, a bolection moulded fireplace, and two semi-circular headed corner cupboards with shell motif in the heads. The drawing room includes early 18th-century fielded pine panelling, possibly inserted around 1930, a bolection moulded fireplace, and a Venetian window with pine Corinthianesque pilasters flanking two pine Corinthianesque half columns. A back sitting room has 18th-century pine cupboards with flanking fluted pilasters and fielded panelling. A 18th-century fireplace is found in the master bedroom, featuring an eared outer surround, a bolection moulded inner surround, bands of Greek key pattern, and Delft tiles. The house has 18th-century staggered purlin roofs.
