Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church that is now redundant. It was built in 1811, incorporating fragments from the mid-12th century, with later additions from the late 19th century. The church is constructed of green sandstone rubble, with some limestone ashlar dressings, and features a slate roof topped with a gabled west bellcote that has semi-circular headed bell openings and a stone-coped gable.
The structure includes a nave with the west bellcote and a chancel that has a north vestry. The west front displays a semi-circular headed doorway with a keystone, imposts, an ornate traceried fanlight, and double doors featuring upper semi-circular headed panels. The north side of the nave is unfenestrated. The late 19th century north vestry has a gabled roof and a blocked lancet window on its east side. The east end of the chancel is adorned with three 19th century lancets, the central one being taller.
On the south side of the nave, there are two semi-circular headed windows with Y tracery. The mid-12th century chancel arch features a semi-circular chamfered head and polygonal responds with moulded capitals and abaci. The late 19th century vestry doorway has a pointed head and a continuous moulded surround. Inside, there are 19th century pews and a pulpit. The church is currently in a severe state of dilapidation.
