Description

42-42a Market Place is a three-storey building with attics, constructed of red brick with stone dressings that have been painted on the front elevation. It features a plain tile roof on the main section, while the rear extensions have flat roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the rear range being a 20th-century extension.

The front facade has three bays and includes a 20th-century shop front. On the first floor, there are three plain sash windows, and two smaller windows are located on the upper floor, all beneath wedge lintels. A shallow dentilled wooden cornice runs along the eaves, and there are red-brick gable chimney stacks, with the right-hand gable stack truncated. The attic features two gabled dormer windows with plain sash window frames, lead sheet coverings, and rendered cheeks.

Internally, the building has undergone significant alterations, making the original ground-floor plan difficult to discern, as it has been completely remodeled for restaurant use. A relocated stair provides access to the upper floors. The upper levels have seen fewer changes, with a 19th-century turned baluster stair still present, although the balusters are now boarded over. The upper floor rooms contain chimney breasts, but the fireplaces have been removed. These rooms, currently used for storage, retain moulded architraves and some moulded cornice work, though all original doors have been taken out. The stairway between the first and second floors crosses a now-blocked semi-circular arch-headed recess, indicating that the building may have been connected to its adjacent neighbor before previous remodeling.
