Description
16A, 18, and 20 High Street is a building that originally served as a house but is now a pair of shops and offices. It has origins dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is constructed of red and brown brick, topped with a pantile roof, and features brick-coped gables and gable stacks. There is a small area of timber framing visible.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a five-bay front, which includes a brick band on the second floor and a cornice gutter supported by brackets. The building has two late 19th-century shop fronts with brackets for the fascia and 20th-century shop windows. A central 20th-century doorway has a plain surround and a hood. On the first floor, there is a canted oriel bay window that extends through two storeys, adorned with reeded pilasters and roundels at the corners and on the panels. To the right, there are four plain sash windows, and above them, four smaller sash windows with glazing bars.
At the rear, a long catslide roof reveals a small area of 17th-century framing in a side wall. The main rear wing features three openings with splayed stone lintels and keystones, although the original arrangement of the rear front has been altered over time. There are also 20th-century single-storey extensions at the back.
Inside, the building retains a turned baluster staircase from the 18th century, panel doors, remnants of 18th-century panelling, and some late thin timber framing visible in the passage walls.
