Description

Burton Hall is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring ashlar dressings, and has a plain tiled roof with raised brick coped tumbled gables, finials, and moulded kneelers. Originally of an H-plan, it incorporated screens passages. The house has a single large ridge stack with four shafts, along with two later wall stacks. It is two storeys high, with attics, and has a four-bay front, with advanced and separately gabled end bays and a central gable. It has a tall plinth, chamfered offsets to the first floor, and to the gables. A 20th century door now occupies the centre, covering the original chamfered opening. A single five-light cavetto moulded mullion window with a moulded hood and label stops sits to the right, while two five-light mullion windows are on the left. The first floor has three four-light windows of a similar design, alongside two 19th-century two-light mullioned windows. Single three-light windows are found in the three gables. The rear elevation mirrors the front, except for a 19th-century passage connecting the wings, which incorporates two reused moulded door hoods from the original screens passage doorways. The left-hand side has a two-light window and an inserted door, above which is a four-light window. On the right-hand side, a garden wall stands 5 feet high, constructed in English bond with deeply chamfered brick coping. Internally, the house retains chamfered beams with shield stops, a brick fireplace with chamfered stops on the first floor, and a numbered clasped purl in a pegged oak roof.
