Description
The Midland Bank is a bank building constructed in 1864, featuring minor alterations from the 20th century. It was designed for the banking company Gee, Wise and Gee. The building is made of stucco and has a slate roof.
The exterior showcases a three-storey, five-bay front with a parapet that includes a heavy modillion cornice and a small dentil cornice. The ground floor is characterized by channelled rustication, with a deep moulded sill band leading to the first floor. There is a dentilled cornice separating the first and second floors, and the second floor has angle quoins. On the ground floor, there is a doorway on the left with a round-arched head featuring a shield-bearing keystone. This doorway is supported by carved console brackets that hold a dentilled cornice above, along with a decorative cast-iron guard for the first-floor windows. Engaged granite colonnettes with foliated capitals are present in the spandrels. The door is panelled and includes a fanlight. To the right of the doorway, there are four semicircular-headed windows, each adorned with female mask keystones. The first floor features five semicircular-headed windows with keystones and moulded heads, which are connected by a string at impost height, along with recessed panels between the windows. The second floor has five plain sash windows with segmental heads, moulded surrounds, and ramped bases.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the banking company of Gee, Wise and Gee failed ten years after the building's completion, leading to its takeover by the Lincoln and Lindsay Bank.
