Description
The White Hart Hotel is a hotel located on High Street in Boston. It was built in the mid-18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early and mid-19th century. The wing that runs at right angles to the river was added after 1807, following the construction of the new town bridge. The building is constructed of red brick and stucco, with slate roofs, and has an L-shaped plan.
The main front of the hotel is three storeys high, plus attics, and features seven bays with quoins. It has a heavy moulded and dentilled cornice and a parapet with pierced ovals. There is an off-centre elliptical carriage archway with a keystone, plain pilasters, and an entablature. To the left, there is a small shop window with a moulded surround, cornice, and ramped base. To the right, there are two plain sashes with pedimented moulded surrounds and ramped bases, along with a recessed doorway.
On the first and second floors, there are seven plain sashes with moulded surrounds, with the upper ones featuring tabbed sills. The attic has four modern dormer windows. The taller added wing is three storeys high and has three bays in a quasi-Jacobean style, complete with a balustraded parapet and dentilled cornice. The ground floor features a dentilled entablature and a deep band between the first and second floors, adorned with a roundel and acanthus ornament. Each floor is marked by pilasters, with fluted Corinthian pilasters on the ground floor and Doric pilasters with marked entasis above. The ground floor has a modern entrance to the left and two plain sashes to the right. The first floor features three tall full-height divided sashes, while the second floor has three semi-circular-headed sashes. All windows have moulded surrounds, with those on the top floor decorated with roundels.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the original White Hart was demolished in the early 19th century for New Bridge Street, and the current building was previously known as the "Unicorn."
