Description

Bargate Bridge is a road bridge built in 1805 by John Rennie and altered in 1972 by the Department of Transport. It is constructed from gritstone ashlar and features a single span elliptical arch with rustications. The bridge has a parapet ledge with broad rustications and parapet end piers that have raked coping. The central panel is slightly advanced with a recessed panel and moulded coping. This bridge was part of a larger project to reclaim the East, West, and Wildmore Fens between 1803 and 1813. In 1972, the south side of the bridge was taken down and rebuilt using the original materials and to the same design as part of a road widening scheme.
