Description
The Maud Foster Drain, along with its walls, steps, and railings, is a drainage channel constructed around 1810, originally designed by John Rennie and later altered in the 20th century. It features red brick and ashlar gritstone, with brick retaining walls that were renewed in the 20th century, topped with gritstone ashlar coping blocks. The walls slope down to the water level, ending at Bargate Bridge to the south and curving to stop ends at the north.
On both sides of the drain near Bargate Bridge, there are pairs of pedestrian steps set within the thickness of the wall, leading down to a small stone platform at the base. On the west side, adjacent to Bargate Bridge, there are wider steps with curved side walls made of original brickwork and ashlar quoins. The retaining walls, except for one higher section on the west side, reach road level and are complemented by early 20th-century oak posts and rail balustrades.
