Description

Barclays Bank is a bank building constructed in 1876, designed by Lockwood and Mawson of Bradford in a late Gothic style. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the sides are built with Gault brick featuring ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof.

The exterior has three storeys, with a full-height canted end. It features a moulded plinth, double string courses on each floor, a cornice adorned with carved florets, and a parapet that includes pierced quatrefoils containing shields. On the right side, there is a panelled entrance door with an overlight that has carved stone glazing bars in an ogee pattern, set within a slightly advanced bay that has a shouldered arch. To the left, there are two plain sash windows with shaped shouldered heads and narrow colonnettes. Above these, three stone hoods on carved brackets support panels featuring three pierced quatrefoils. Each side of the bay has three cross-mullioned windows on the first and second floors. A further bay is set back on the left, with single similar windows on both the side and front for each floor.

The return of the building has two gables, which include mullioned windows and two-storey canted bay windows. In the gables, there are shields set in quatrefoils within recessed panels.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building was formerly the premises of the Stamford and Spalding Banking Company, which was founded in Stamford in the early 1830s, with its first branch in Boston opening in 1835.
