Description

No. 52 Spittal is a small house with origins in the late 15th and 16th centuries, featuring a cruck truss exposed in the left gable. The property was largely rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick with dentil eaves and a 20th-century tile roof. The house has a brick chimney to the right of each bay. It is two storeys high, with two bays. The ground floor to the right has a two-light horizontal sash window with glazing bars. Other windows are 20th-century two-light wooden casements. A 20th-century door is situated to the left of each bay. The ground floor openings in the left bay have segmental heads. A lean-to extension is attached to the right end of the house. The left gable end displays a cruck truss and a low stone plinth. The house sits on or near the site of a hospital founded in the 12th century.
