Description
Osgathorpe Hall Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that displays Renaissance influences. It is constructed of uncoursed rubble on a plinth and features a main range with a gabled cross wing. The building has two storeys and an attic, with the principal front facing south. This orientation is due to recent modifications; originally, access was through opposed entrances to the east of the main range, but it has since been moved to the center of the south front. The entrance includes a doorway with a bolection moulded architrave and a triangular pediment above.
The main range is adorned with tall mullioned windows that have deep plain architraves and mouldings, and there is a moulded stone string course above each floor. The cross wing projects to the west and features angle quoins, stone coping, and kneelers on the gable. It has three-light mullioned and transomed windows, and a smaller mullion in the gable with a plain hood mould and a decorative blank oval above.
On the west side elevation, there are two massive projecting stacks with angle quoins and various two-light mullioned windows with continuous hood moulds, which light the staircase within. To the east, there is a low projecting gable with two-light mullions that is a modern pastiche of an earlier core. Inside, the farmhouse has an open-well closed-string staircase. A decorative detail, shown in photographs taken before alterations, connects this house with the school and almshouses in the village, and it is believed to have been built for their founder, Thomas Harley.
