Description
Beech House is a house dating from circa 1700. It is constructed of red brick, with traces of a former colour wash to the front, and has a stone top moulding to the plinth, stone bands, quoins, a cornice to the front, and a slate front roof with plain tile to the rear. Two symmetrical ridge stacks are present. The house has two storeys and seven windows, featuring flat gauged brick lintels, stone keystones, and stone sills. Early 19th century wooden mullion and transom windows with 4/4 panes replaced earlier window frames. The ground floor has a tripartite window of a similar date and style to either end, replacing four former windows whose lintels remain; the replacement is described as a very careful alteration. A central stone doorway has a bolection moulded shape and a segmental pediment, leading to a 18th/19th century six-panel oak door. Two 2-light stone mullions are blocked at basement level. A small semi-circular window is located in the attic, dating from circa 1800. On the right-hand end are two blocked windows and a renewed attic casement; on the left, the ground floor has a 19th century mullion and transom window (4/4 panes), the first floor is blocked, and there are two renewed attic casements (4/4 panes). A gabled staircase projection to the rear has a low, wide door, which may have been reset, three stone steps, and two 19th century casements. A single stone light is found in the basement. Dormers are present to the right-hand side, one stacked above the other. The interior features an original oak well staircase, exposed beams, and an inglenook in the kitchen. To the rear, a 2-story 18th century wing has 20th century casements and a side stack. A 20th century one-story extension projects from this wing, adjoining the left end of the main range, containing a door with a three-pane overlight, a 4/4 pane window to the left with a 2-light casement above it, and a dormer above. Windows to the sides and rear have cambered lintels.
