Description

Number 72 and its attached outbuildings is a house built around 1730-1740 for the Dalby family, who still reside there. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, featuring a hipped slate roof and brick chimneys. It is a double pile structure with three storeys and a layout of three by two bays. Notable architectural details include a chamfered stone plinth and quoins, moulded stone eaves, and moulded stone cornices on the chimneys. The front quoins are hollow-chamfered, and the side elevations have brick band courses. The windows are three-pane boxed sashes with gauged brick keystones, while the front is more elaborate, with ground and first floor windows that have fluted keystones and small cornices. The eaves cornice slightly projects over the central bay, which features moulded stone architrave surrounds to the windows; the first-floor window has ears, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. The central panelled door has tall glazed top panels and a fine stone Gibbs surround with a moulded pediment, accessed by stone steps. The rear of the house has a later three-storey porch projection at the centre, which includes a half-glazed door and arched windows. Attached to the rear at the northwest corner is a single-storey range of outbuildings. Inside, the house retains an original central staircase with turned balusters, a pulvinated string, a moulded handrail, and fluted newel columns. The main ground floor rooms feature early to mid-19th century fittings, with the right room showcasing fluted shutters and doorcases, arched niches with shaped shelves, a plaster ceiling frieze with urns, and a plaster surround to a mirror.
