Description

The raised terrace in front of Egerton Lodge dates from the early 19th century and features a low coped sandstone parapet with stone tablets that list the names of those who fell in both world wars. The center of the terrace is ramped up over a balustrade, from which steps lead down to the garden. At each end of the terrace are tall ashlar piers topped with ball finials. At the eastern end, there is a 17th-century doorway that has been relocated from "The Limes." This doorway is adorned with a stone ogee arch and cornice, and it includes a large trap that is said to have been used to distribute bread to the poor. The terrace, along with Egerton Lodge, the archway in the eastern garden wall, Lady Wilton's Bridge, the Horse Wash, Leicester Road, and Nos 29 to 33 High Street, form a notable group of buildings of local interest.
