Description
No 18 on Church Street is an early 19th-century building, with some later alterations. It is constructed of red brick, featuring some lighter headers, and the top storey may have been added later. The building is situated at the corner of Church Street and Church Terrace, directly opposite the Churchyard. It stands three storeys tall and has two windows on each street facade. The windows are sashes, some of which have moulded boxed frames and cambered head linings, all with glazing bars and segmental arches. The ground floor facing Church Street includes a canted bay with a cornice and late 19th-century glazing. The entrance door is adorned with a bracketed hood, reeded pilasters, and a rectangular fanlight, and it is a six-panelled door.
This building, along with Nos 6, 8, and 12 to 18 (even), as well as the western workshop and garden wall at No 18, forms a group with the rear wing of The Grapes Inn, Market Place, and The Parish Church of St Mary. Nos 6 and 8 are noted for their local interest, and No 18 also contributes to a group on Church Terrace with its western workshop and garden wall.
