Description
The Knipton Memorial Cross is a war memorial located in a small garden surrounded by a wooden fence at the southern end of the triangular green where Croxton Road meets Nursery Lane. It stands approximately 5 meters tall and features a stone wheel-head cross with floral terminals that rises from a circular column. This column is set on a square plinth, which is elevated by three square steps and a large, square, rubble-faced base.
On the front of the plinth, there is a slate tablet with the dedicatory inscription that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ KNIPTON WHO MADE THE SUPREME/ SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ IN THANKFULNESS TO GOD FOR THE/ VICTORY THEIR VALOUR HELPED TO/ WIN AND ALSO TO COMMEMORATE/ THE PATRIOTISM OF ALL FROM THIS/ VILLAGE WHO FOUGHT FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY. THIS MONUMENT IS SET/ UP BY THOSE WHO LOVE THEM/ AND ARE PROUD OF THEM."
Additional slate tablets on the other three sides of the plinth list the names of those commemorated. A slate ledger stone at the base records the names of individuals from the Second World War.
