Description
The Earl of Rutland Hospital is a building founded around 1590, still serving as sheltered housing. The front range dates from the 16th century and is constructed of ironstone, limestone, and some later brick, which was previously rendered and colorwashed. The rear range, built in the mid-18th century, is mostly brick and partly rendered. Both sections have M-shaped roofs with different pitches, covered with concrete tiles added in 1985.
The building has two storeys with attics and features an east front with five irregular bays. There is a door located to the left of center, beneath an overlight. The ground floor includes two 3-light and two 2-light hollow mullioned stone casements, which are mirrored by similar windows on the upper floor. Above the door, there is a 2-light leaded casement window from the late 17th century. The gabled roof has two ridge stacks positioned on either side of the doorway.
The rear range, from the 18th century, also has two storeys and five irregular bays, with a platband separating the storeys. A door is located on the right side of this elevation. The ground floor features 2-light timber cross casements, while the first floor has 2-light iron lattice casements. The gabled roof has three ridge stacks, one of which is located at the north gable end. The interior has not been inspected.
