Description

The Rose and Crown Public House is a public house located in Tilton on the Hill, dated 1707 but featuring a significantly older core. The building is rendered over ironstone rubble and has a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high with a long facade facing the street. To the left of the doorway, there are two renewed three-light casement windows, followed by a small two-light window to the right and another three-light casement beyond. There is a long section of blank wall and an outbuilding with a door and a blocked window beyond it. The first floor has five two-light casement windows, with a date stone beneath a small hoodmould between the right-hand two, displaying the initials A over T.B. The building features gable and axial stacks.

Inside, various timber posts, including one that is chamfered, suggest an earlier timber-framed origin. There is also the stump of a possible cut-off cruck blade. The early 17th-century staircase has a moulded handrail and simple newels with rough finials. An inglenook fireplace features a late 16th-century or early 17th-century carved wood cornice above, with an interlace pattern that is repeated along one of the beams, indicating the position of an earlier cross wall. The ceiling is panelled with ornately moulded wood beams of a similar date.
