Description
The outbuilding at Manor Farm in Tilton on the Hill is a disused structure that may have once served as a dwelling. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier and is built from coursed ironstone rubble. The original roof has been removed and replaced with a nearly flat one. This single-celled building was formerly two storeys high.
The north elevation features a central doorway with a rough timber lintel and stone jambs that are chamfered on the inside. There is one very low window on each side of the doorway, with stone jambs and heads, indicating a change in ground level. Above the doorway, there is an upper two-light wood mullioned window with a wood lintel, and a string course runs along the building.
On the south elevation, there are traces of a former ground floor opening to the left, which has a round arched head with voussoirs. Above this, a large window with a chamfered stone surround can be found. Additionally, there is a stone window at first floor level in the east gable. Inside, a 4-centred arched and chamfered stone fireplace is located in the centre of the south wall, though it is partially obscured by the risen floor level.
Locally, the building is known as the Chapel, and its site raises the possibility that it could be a remnant of a small monastic hospital established in Tilton in the 13th century, although its later history remains unclear.
