Description
The Tilton on the Hill War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled on 4 July 1920 by Major Dawson. It is made of Castle Hill Granite and has a rectangular plan.
The memorial is prominently located next to the path leading to the south porch of the Church of St Peter, which is listed at Grade I. It features a single-stepped rectangular base supporting a tapering rectangular plinth, topped by a slightly tapering rectangular shaft that is surmounted by an infilled wheel cross. The face of the cross has a relief of a sword of sacrifice.
At the base of the shaft, there is a leaded inscription that reads "TO THE/ GLORY/ OF GOD." On the east face of the plinth, the inscription states, "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919," followed by the names of 12 men from the parish who lost their lives.
The memorial is located approximately 10 meters west of a listed and scheduled churchyard cross.
