Description
Halstead House is a large farmhouse dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is built of coursed ironstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof. The symmetrical, three-bay front facade features a central recessed door with a decorative fanlight, framed by a reeded wood architrave and stone voussoirs. There are 12-light sash windows with voussoirs to the ground and first floors, and 2-light casement windows under flat timber lintels in the attic. Coped gables and brick gable end stacks are present.
A rear wing features a 12-light sash window with voussoirs on each floor and a 2-light casement window in the attic. There is also an additional lower wing with a wide 6-light sash window under a flat timber lintel on the ground floor and a 4-light window above. A gable end stack is present. Beyond the lower wing is a roofed cart entry, leading to an outbuilding which may have originally been stables with a hayloft above. The outbuilding has a doorway with a cambered stone head in the gable wall leading to a flight of stone steps to the first floor. The north-east elevation includes two wide doorways to the left and a door with a cambered stone head beyond. Above, the hay loft features two wide doors and dormer gables with thin timbering and blue brick sloping sills.
