Description
A bank with two shops, dating from around 1800, with a rear section from the 17th century. The front is built of red brick, with a brick plinth, dentilled eaves, a tile roof, a brick ridge, and chimney stacks on the right end. The rear section is a timber-framed structure faced with granite rubble stone and has a Swithland slate roof.
The front of the building has three storeys with a row of three three-light casement windows on each floor, all opening inwards and with top lights, except for the second floor where the top lights are omitted. Each window has a gauged brick lintel above it. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century shop window on the left and a pair of 19th-century shop fronts with doors on the right, all sheltered under the same cornice, with ornamental pilasters beside them. On the right end, facing the Market Cross, is a small 20th-century window. The first floor has a Venetian window with a three-light horizontal sliding sash; above this, on the second floor, is a blocked semi-circular window with some of the curved glazing bars still in place. A small one-light window is visible on the first floor of the rear section, which adjoins, and was originally part of numbers 1 and 3 Watling Street.
