Description

This large house, dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, is located in Barrow upon Soar. It has a hall and cross wing plan, with a third unit situated below the hall stack. The house is constructed of coursed limestone on a rubble plinth, with a roof of swithland slate. It is two storeys high, with an attic in the crow-stepped brick gable of the cross wing; this attic window is distinguished by a semi-circular relieving arch. Other windows are long, low, four-light wood mullioned casements with leaded diamond lattices. A tall, projecting stone porch with a brick gable and plain timber architraves to the doorway stands at the junction of the hall and cross wing. A large stone chimney stack with brick shafts is visible below the hall range. A rear, angled wing and a projecting porch in a classical style are located on the north side. The south end wall features brick and rubble buttressing. It is reputed to be the birthplace and home of Bishop Beveridge, born in 1636 and later Bishop of St. Asaphs from 1704 to 1708.
