Description
Number 47 is a house dating from the late 17th century, extended and modified in later periods. The rear gable of one wing is dated 1691, with burnt headers indicating this date. The house is constructed with Flemish bond brickwork throughout, with vitrified headers in the southern section and a rubble plinth beneath. The northern section is later, being two storeys and two units wide, with a swithland slate roof and a central chimney stack. The windows are replacement sashes dating from approximately 1840, with margin lights projecting from the wall face. Brick heads to former window openings are visible, one curved and one flat, along with a brick sill course and a dentilled eaves cornice. The southern range, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, is also two storeys and two bays wide and includes a doorway to the left featuring an elegant, fluted doorcase with overlight in a derived classical style. It has a tiled roof and a ridge stack located behind the door. The interior contains remnants of an earlier timber-framed structure, including a portion of an upper cruck, along with 18th-century panelled doors.
Attached to the rear is a garden wall constructed from brick using an English garden wall bond, with a gazebo attached. The gazebo likely dates from around 1700 and features a brick front wall topped with a concrete pediment and coping, a large segmental arch, and a rear wall built of Suithland rubble.
