Description
Theophilus Cave's Almshouses, founded in 1686 by Humphrey Babington in memory of his uncle, Theophilus Cave, were designed to accommodate six bachelors. The building has a deep 'U' plan and is two storeys high. The lower storey features original random granite rubble, while the first floor has later (early 19th century) Flemish bond brickwork. It includes limestone and brick dressings, with limestone quoins, and is topped by a hipped slate roof. The windows are elaborately latticed casements, although some have been replaced. The central range consists of three bays and features a central projecting stone porch supported by Tuscan pilasters, with an overlight above the architrave. Above this is a broken pediment that contains a coat of arms. The boundary wall includes a central stone gateway with Tuscan pilasters, an architrave, and a broken pediment featuring arms and an inscription plate beneath. Large consoles connect the gateway to the boundary wall on each side.
