Description
Humphrey Babington House is a pair of almshouses built in 1825, originally established as a women's almshouse, extending the original bequest of Humphrey Babington, who founded Theophilus Cave's almshouses. The building features white brickwork in a thin Gothic style and consists of two storeys with five bays. The central bay projects with a steeply pitched gable that has polygonal chimneys at the corners resembling turrets. It includes a central doorway with a pointed arch beneath a hoodmould, which is now blocked and has been converted into a window. Above this doorway is a two-light Gothic arched window, along with an inscription tablet and a coat of arms. The gable has a parapet and a decorative string course that follows the roof's angle, continuing across the facade. The other bays contain two-light Gothic-style windows with latticed panes and hoodmoulds. The building also features corner buttresses and gable and chimney stacks. In 1976, the interior accommodation was altered.
