Description
The Barrow upon Soar War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921, designed by the architect William Douglas Caröe. It is made of Clipsham stone and features a cross on a tall shaft, which is raised on a square pedestal with a stepped octagonal base. Notable decorative elements include a niche near the foot of the shaft that contains a figure of St George. The memorial is inscribed with the words "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS" and lists the names of those who died. In 1920, the Parish Council decided to create a memorial for the fallen of the First World War, which was funded by public subscription and dedicated in May 1921 by Colonel R E Martin of the Leicestershire Regiment. It was later also dedicated to those who died in the Second World War. This memorial is a significant example of a tribute to the dead of both world wars and showcases the work of a prominent architect.
