Description
The School, built in 1884, was constructed by the Leicester Poor Law Union for the cottage homes. Designed by I. Baradale, the building is of brick construction with a Welsh slate roof. It comprises three distinct units arranged around a small playground.
The central main block is simple in design, with one and a half storeys and a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof, featuring a gabled dormer window. To the left, two semi-circular brick arches connect the main block to a wing; one arch provides access to the yard, while the other forms a window opening for a school office. The left wing’s gable end has a four-light timber mullioned window on the first floor, accompanied below by a pair of French windows and a single-light wooden casement. Wide overhanging eaves are visible, with exposed purlins in the gable. Three dormer windows are positioned on the outer roof slope, two smaller ones flanking a central, larger dormer, each with three or four lights respectively. A similar arrangement of dormers is present on the right-hand wing's roof. This wing also features a high gable and steeply pitched roof, with an elliptical arched window in the gable. A timber and lead bellcote and spire, topped with a crucifix, sits on the ridge.
