Description

The boilerhouse and water tower were built in 1884 for the Countesthorpe cottage homes by the Leicester Poor Law Union, designed by architect I. Baradale. Constructed of brick with Welsh slate roofs, the tower is a tall brick structure featuring stone corbels that support brick machicolations. It is topped with a pyramidal slate roof that has wide overhanging eaves. Next to the tower are the former boilerhouse and coal stores, which have been altered but still retain their original form. These buildings include several decorative features, such as patterned cast iron grilles and a circular lantern topped with an ogee cupola and crucifix.
