Description
The Residence is a house that was originally one of the cottage homes built by the Leicester Poor Law Union in 1884, designed by architect I. Baradale. It is constructed of brick and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has three irregular bays, with the left-hand gabled bay projecting forward. It is two storeys high and has irregular fenestration that includes 2, 3, and 4 light windows, most of which have mullions and transoms. The left-hand gabled wing has painted plaster and timber above the eaves level, along with wide overhanging eaves.
Adjacent to this wing and the central bay of the house is a single-storey porch made of brick, which features a deep gauged brick arch and a hood mould above. Above the porch is a balcony with a brick parapet and carved stone coping. To the left of the porch, there is an inscribed plaque that states, "these cottage homes were built by the Leicester Board of Guardians A.D. 1884 E.B. Pipes Chairman." The plaque also lists the 37 Vice-Chairmen, 7 of whom formed the Cottage Homes Committee, as well as L.B. Chamberlain, Clerk, A.P. Higgs, Superintendent, and I. Baradale, Architect.
