Description

Sharnford Shade is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 18th century and underwent extensive additions by Colonel Harris in 1909, although much of this work was demolished in 1975. The building is constructed of brick, which is rendered and whitewashed, and features hipped slate roofs. It has a plinth, a first-floor band, deep moulded eaves, and both single lateral and single ridge brick stacks. The structure is two storeys high with garrets and consists of five bays arranged in an L-plan.

The east front showcases a central gabled porch with a recessed front that includes two fluted Ionic columns flanking a six-panel door. On either side of the door, there are margin pane fixed lights. Additionally, there are two full-height glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves and hoods on each side of the porch. Above the door, there is a triple sash flanked by two smaller glazing bar sashes on each side. The south end features a full-height sash window similar to those at the front, while the north end has an off-centre 20th-century glazed door. The rear elevation displays irregular fenestration, primarily from the late 20th century.

Inside, the entrance hall is notable for its two fluted columns with lotus leaf capitals, a picture rail, and an enriched moulded cornice. The square stairwell features an enriched cornice and a foliate ceiling boss, housing a late 18th-century cantilevered wooden staircase with turned balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail. The northeast ground floor room includes a moulded cornice and a 19th-century marble fireplace, while the southwest room has a similar fireplace. The doors throughout the house have four fielded panels.
