Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church that dates from the 11th century, with additions and alterations from the 13th, 14th, and 16th centuries. It was restored in 1845 and around 1900. The building is constructed of random rubble, cobbles, and dressed stone, featuring stone dressings and a plain tile roof, with a brick and stone plinth. The nave and chancel are covered by a continuous roof.

The west end of the church has a central double lancet window with Y tracery and a hood mould that includes mask stops. Above this is a square wooden bellcote with cusped openings, topped by a leaded tent roof and a cross. On the north side, there is a chamfered round-headed doorway from the 11th century, complete with a hood mould and imposts, leading to a 19th-century close boarded door. The east end features a 14th-century double lancet window with Y tracery. The south side has a central 19th-century single lancet window with a hood mould, and to its right, a similar lancet. To the east, there is a single lancet window from the 13th century.

Inside, the church has a panelled dado along the north side and the west end. The roof consists of two principal rafter trusses from the 16th century, which have cambered tie beams; the western truss includes a boss. The east end contains a stained glass window from 1965. Notable fittings include an octagonal font, which was removed from Hemingford, Hunts, around 1900, an oak altar designed in the style of 13th-century arcading from around 1909, a panelled reredos, a rectangular skeleton pulpit from the 19th century with two book rests, and a double round-headed framed board with the Creed, along with two similar round-headed boards for the commandments.
