Description

This is a row of four early 19th-century houses at 55-61 Castle Street, situated in the Parish of Melbourne. The buildings, which appear as two matching pairs, are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, a stone plinth, and slate roofs. The roofs have brick gable stacks and dentilled brick eaves bands. The houses are arranged over three storeys and each pair has three bays.

The southern pair, numbers 55 and 57, feature a central moulded Venetian-style arrangement of doorcases. The central door has a semicircular headed passage doorcase, flanked by flat-headed doorcases. The side doorcases contain 20th-century flush doors, while the central opening has a similar door with a traceried fanlight above it. Above the doors are single glazing bar sashes beneath rusticated wedge lintels, and three more similar sashes above those. There are then a further three smaller, similar sashes on the second floor.

The northern pair, numbers 59 and 61, are identical in design except for the doors and some of the windows. The northern pair have six-panelled doors. Also, the ground-floor sashes and the two northern sashes on the first and second floors have been replaced with 20th-century glazing bar sash-style top-hung casements.
