Description
The alcove, which encloses a pillar fountain, is located to the east of No 20 on High Street in Ticknall. This early 19th-century structure is made of rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings. It features a keyed round-arched opening flanked by pilaster strips and has a flat top. Inside, there is a half-domed space that houses a pillar fountain, manufactured around 1914 by Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock. This fountain was installed at the direction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe for Calke Abbey.
The fountain has a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome that includes a tap lever handle. The tap outlet is surrounded by a lion mask, and there is an integral bucket platform at the base. The design of the fountain, which is believed to be from the late 19th century, is known as 'Kennedy's patent, self-closing, anti-freezing Pillar Fountain'.
This fountain is part of a fresh-water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is associated with the Harpur-Crewe Estate. There are 16 other similar examples in the area. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir that was filled by water drawn from a well using a wind-pump.
