Description

A 17th-century tithe barn, located near Old Hall Farmhouse in the parish of Swarkestone, Derbyshire, it was converted into a house around 1985. The barn is constructed of ashlar stone with stone dressings, quoins, and a plinth, and it has a plain tile roof with a metal chimney flue and five roof lights on the south side. It is two stories high and four bays wide. The north elevation features a 20th-century wooden door within a simple doorcase on the east side, and three small, recessed, and chamfered single-light windows on the west side. The first floor has similar windows. The west gable wall has matching windows on both the ground and first floors. The south elevation incorporates a full-height 20th-century glazed screen on the east, which continues upwards into the roof as roof lights, and three similar recessed and chamfered single-light windows below, mirrored on the first floor. All windows are modern single-pane casements. The interior reveals three large queen strut trusses with cambered tie beams, double purlins, and windbraces to the upper purlins.
