Description
Swarkestone Hall Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with 19th-century additions at the rear. It was built by the Harpur family and features ashlar stone with stone dressings, flush quoins, and a plinth. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has moulded stone copings on the gables, along with flush parapets and a large central brick ridge stack, as well as a smaller brick ridge stack.
The farmhouse has two storeys plus attics and is arranged in three bays, with the front and rear elevations showcasing three tall gables in the center, flanked by straight parapets. The main elevation includes two semi-circular steps leading up to a central moulded four-centred arched doorcase, which has a three-light mullioned overlight and a long dripmould. To the north of the doorcase is a later small pane window, followed by a three-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a dripmould. A similar window is located to the south of the doorcase, with three shallower windows above it. Above these, there are three more similar mullioned windows in the gables. Both the north and south gable walls have similar windows on each floor, and the rear elevation features similar windows on the first floor and in the gables.
Attached to the north side of the rear elevation is a late 19th-century brick addition with glazing bar sashes. Inside, the farmhouse includes a winder staircase with plain splat balusters, large chamfered ceiling beams, and some inglenook fireplaces.
